Dr. T's Tidbits
For a prettier SCAR:
Several of my patients have told me about this nonprescription treatment that they have used to make their surgical scar less noticeable. It can be safely used once the surgical wound is sealed and dry. Usually within 5 to 7 days after surgery depending on the surgical site. Always check with your surgeon before using these.
Curad markets this product to “reduce raised, colored and keloid scars. The product is a clear pad that is applied for at least 12 hours a day over and 8 week period according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.
It seems to work by applying traction to the scar edges preventing the natural spreading of the scar by overcoming the skins natural elastic tendencies that cause a scar to spread and widen. (This is why children’s scars are often broader and more raised than grandma’s)
Another product is a cream: Mederma which is applied to the scar 3-4 times a day for 8 weeks.
